The New Digital Shelf: How Quick Commerce Apps Are Turning Into Advertising Powerhouses in India

When Shopping Apps Become Media Platforms

A consumer opens a shopping app to order milk, snacks or skincare products. Before reaching checkout, the customer may encounter sponsored listings, promoted products and branded placements competing for attention.

This everyday shopping experience is creating a new opportunity for advertisers. Quick-commerce platforms such as Blinkit and Swiggy Instamart are no longer just delivery channels; they are also developing advertising products that allow brands to reach consumers while they are actively shopping.

The trend is part of a wider shift towards retail media, where retailers monetise advertising space across their digital platforms and physical stores.

For Indian brands, the attraction is straightforward: advertising can appear closer to the purchase decision rather than relying exclusively on broad awareness campaigns.

Why Brands Are Paying Attention

Traditional digital advertising often focuses on reaching consumers through search engines, social networks and video platforms. Retail media introduces another opportunity by placing advertisements directly within the shopping journey.

A packaged-food company might promote a new snack when customers browse a relevant category. A beauty brand could increase the visibility of a skincare product, while a household-products manufacturer might use sponsored placements to compete for shoppers searching for everyday essentials.

The appeal is particularly strong for products that consumers purchase frequently and can evaluate quickly.

Blinkit’s official advertising platform offers sponsored placements across search, category pages, recommendations and brand stores. Its advertising tools also describe geographic and audience-based targeting options.

Meanwhile, Swiggy Instamart’s brand-partner programme allows businesses to onboard products and expand their reach through the platform.

These developments show how shopping platforms are building services that extend beyond order fulfilment.

Google Is Connecting Advertising With Commerce

The growth of retail media is also changing how brands use established advertising platforms.

In August 2025, Google India introduced its Commerce Media Suite to help brands promote products sold through participating e-commerce and quick-commerce marketplaces.

The offering connects Google Ads with marketplace product listings, allowing advertisers to reach potential shoppers across Google properties and direct them towards participating retailers.

Google’s announcement identified platforms including Blinkit, Swiggy, Zepto and Myntra as part of the available marketplace ecosystem.

The company also shared early campaign examples. ITC Aashirvaad Select reported a fourfold return on advertising spend, while RENÉE Cosmetics reported an 11.5% increase in sales on Blinkit alongside a 48% lower cost per order.

These are company-reported campaign results, not guarantees of what other advertisers will achieve. Results depend on factors such as product demand, pricing, stock availability, targeting and measurement methods.

The Advantage of Reaching Shoppers Near Checkout

Retail media can offer brands a different kind of advertising opportunity because consumers are already in a shopping environment.

An advertisement for a relevant product may influence which item a shopper discovers, compares or adds to a basket. Retailers can also connect certain advertising interactions with product-level sales data, providing more visibility into campaign outcomes.

However, proximity to checkout does not automatically mean an advertisement caused a purchase. A customer may already have intended to buy the product.

For this reason, marketers should distinguish between sales attributed to advertising and incremental sales generated because of advertising. Controlled tests and comparisons between exposed and unexposed audiences can help establish whether a campaign genuinely creates additional demand.

The Challenge: Visibility Is Not the Same as Profit

Retail media is not a shortcut to guaranteed growth. Brands must consider the complete economics of selling through a platform.

Advertising costs, discounts, platform fees, packaging, fulfilment expenses and product margins can all influence profitability. A campaign may produce strong reported revenue while generating little additional profit.

Product availability is equally important. If an advertised product is out of stock in a particular delivery area, advertising expenditure may fail to generate the intended result.

Brands should therefore coordinate media spending with inventory, pricing and distribution rather than managing advertising as a separate activity.

Another challenge is fragmentation. Different retailers may use different reporting systems, attribution windows and campaign formats, making direct comparisons difficult.

How Indian Brands Should Approach Retail Media

Businesses considering this channel should begin with a focused experiment rather than immediately shifting large portions of their advertising budgets.

First, identify products with reliable availability and sufficient margins. Next, select relevant search terms and placements, establish a clear campaign objective, and define how success will be measured.

Track impressions, clicks, conversion rates, attributed sales and advertising costs, but also examine repeat purchases, customer acquisition costs and incremental profit.

Brands should compare results across products, cities and time periods where possible. This helps identify whether performance comes from advertising itself or from other factors such as seasonal demand and promotional pricing.

Finally, treat retail media as one component of a wider marketing strategy. Search advertising, social media, video, influencer partnerships and traditional media may still play important roles in creating demand before shoppers reach a retail platform.

The Future of Advertising Is Closer to the Purchase

Retail media is changing the relationship between commerce and advertising. Shopping platforms can generate revenue not only by facilitating transactions but also by helping brands compete for consumer attention within those transactions.

For Indian advertisers, this creates an opportunity to connect marketing more closely with sales. Yet the winners will not necessarily be the brands spending the most on sponsored placements.

They will be the businesses that combine relevant advertising, strong product availability, sensible margins and reliable measurement.

The digital shelf is becoming another important advertising battleground. The real competitive advantage will come from understanding not simply where an advertisement appears, but whether it helps create a profitable customer relationship.
