The Scale of the Ecosystem
India’s startup landscape can be understood through more than funding rounds and high-profile valuations. Official ecosystem data also tracks recognised startups, employment, women-led businesses, incubation and intellectual property.
Startup India’s States’ Startup Ranking national report, published in January 2026, highlighted the scale of the country’s recognised startup ecosystem.
The report listed more than 2.07 lakh startups recognised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), more than 99,000 women-led startups and over 27.9 lakh jobs created by startups.
These figures offer a broader view of entrepreneurship than venture capital announcements alone.

Why These Numbers Matter
The number of recognised startups provides an indication of the ecosystem’s breadth, while employment figures help illustrate its contribution to economic activity.
Women-led startup numbers are also important because they provide a way to examine participation and the reach of entrepreneurship support. However, headline figures cannot independently establish whether founders have equal access to capital, networks or markets.
Similarly, startup recognition does not guarantee commercial success. Businesses differ widely in their revenue, survival rates, technology, scale and employment intensity.
Beyond Funding Announcements
Funding rounds attract attention because they provide visible evidence of investor interest. But other indicators are equally useful: revenue growth, customer retention, export activity, patents, jobs and the number of businesses that survive over time.
A startup ecosystem becomes stronger when companies can move from early experimentation to sustainable operations.
What Readers Should Watch
Future assessments should examine how recognised startups progress, how employment changes, whether women-led businesses gain greater access to capital and how states support founders outside major metropolitan centres.
The most meaningful startup rankings will combine scale with outcomes. Counting new businesses is useful, but understanding how many build durable products, create jobs and reach customers offers a more complete picture of India’s entrepreneurial progress.
